Metaverse Makeovers featured in contemporary nail art pop-up Exhibitionist curated by Chinese artist Funa Ye, held at the Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art in Beijing on 15 January.
Exhibitionist is a forward-thinking exhibition that blurs the boundaries between life and art by appropriating the functions of art institutions. Inspired by the innate human need for self-expression, Exhibitionist suggests that even the smallest surface can be a canvas for shaping one’s identity and a rich source of meaning.
Enter the Nail Project - a crowdsourced contemporary nail art exhibition, comprised of submissions from various artists, designers and makers. With the objective of exploring the potential of fingernails - an overlooked artistic canvas typically reserved for manicurists - to act as micro exhibition spaces - Exhibitionist challenges traditional notions of artistic display. This is reflected not only in the unconventional choice of medium, but in the creator - nail art is accessible to anyone, irrespective of age, gender or profession.
As a subversive digital wearable product centred around artistic expression, Metaverse Nails aligned perfectly with the rebellious spirit of Exhibitionist. The Metaverse Nails display featured new gif text art by Chinese artist Ying Miao.
